The SCALE!!!

Thursday, August 13th, 2015

The scale is somehow the most important item when we try to lose weight.  We aren’t happy with our clothes getting too big we have to see that number.  Paul and I didn’t even have a scale and immediately went out and purchased one in January when we started on this journey.

Everyone has a different idea of how and when you should weigh but if you think about it, whatever motivates you should determine how you use the tools you have.   Me,  I was fine only weighing once a week until the first week when on my day to weigh, I hadn’t lost any weight!  What?  Well I got on scale the next day and apparently my body thinks 8 days is a better gauge because on the eigth day I had infact lost more than my predetermined amount of weight for the week!  Yippy.

There is always a bit of relief and a moment of celebration when the scale says you done good!

Paul doesn’t get down when the scale isn’t cooperating, he gets motivation from the negitive information the scale often provides!  In fact he weighs more than once a day, often times he weighs as many times as he walks past the scale and we live in this small RV so walking past the scale is constant!  I’ve seen him step on the scale in the middle of the night.

So, we use the scale constantly and it helps us plan our days.  If it wasn’t nice in the morning I try to make my meals a bit healthier by making sure I am getting whole foods, fruits, vegetables and protein and skipping the carbs which are oh so good.  So it isn’t always a matter of calories, sometimes different kinds of calories are needed to get the results you are looking for.

Bonner County Fair in Sandpoint had just the right mix of farm smells, tractors and food.  We enjoyed huckleberry ice cream, italian sausage, kettle korn, brisket, haystacks and frozen yogurt just in case we hadn’t consumed enough calories!  It was all so yummy.

The fair is definitely not a tourist stop in this quaint lakeside community.  There were no slice’em, dice’em or expensive pots & pans that cook by themselves, just a few local businesses trying to get the word out that they support the community.  There was one lady and her troupe trying to convince teens and their parents to put down the cell phone before they get cancer and one candidate running for the local representative spot.

Conjoined balloons!

Conjoined balloons!

We spent a fair amount of time watching this one lady entertain most of the children at the fair!  She needed an assistant!

The evening’s highlight was the barrel racing in the big arena!  The girls were pretty good.  During the practice, warm up we did see one teenage boy on a horse but he didn’t compete!  I say smart young man, pick a sport where it is mostly girls with rich parents and him!  Great way to get a girlfriend!

And I almost forgot, on Tuesday we got or SeaDoo ride. The weather wasn’t the warmest.  In fact a huge cloud descended on the lake just as we were heading out!  Paul loved it cause he hates the sun.  I wanted it hot so I could fall off and go for a swim.  We did learn that next time we get 2, one for each of us because one of us likes to just go straight and fast and the other wants to stir up the lake!  He did release control for about 15 minutes but wanted to get off!  And at the end of the ride, I got to jump in and take a quick swim.  It was amazing.  The water is crystal clear and not too cold.

Motivate Me!!!!

I’ve been writing this blog since we moved into the RV in January 2009 and I need some inspiration so I’m going to try something new! I will still tell about all the exciting things we are seeing and the fun stuff I think of along the way.  I’m just going to add a bit of my personal journey along the way!

As most of you know Paul and I have reduced our size by a considerable amount in the past 8 months and I’m very proud of us as well as very nervous that I will lose the momentum, so you get to be my motivation!  I’m going to share the journey once in awhile!  Hopefully It isn’t boring, or soapboxy!

Wouldn't it be nice if this was how it worked!

Wouldn’t it be nice if this was how it worked!

In December Paul was told he was becoming diabetic and decided that wasn’t where he wanted to go!  He told the Dr. that he was going to work on it and began the learning faze of why eating the way he was was not the right direction.  Me, I had been wanting the motivation to do something for a long time and knew what needed to be done, I was just lazy!  In May of last year I had decided I had to do something and actually had lost 5 lbs by September and in December I had not gained it back!  That is success in and of itself but really 5 lbs in 6 months!

When Paul began his journey after Christmas I told him about an App that I had played with, Loseit!  and that was his lightbulb!  He loves things to be concrete and technology is perfect for him.  He loves this thing and uses it to its fullest.

So,  we have an App, and we have motivation!  Paul has helped me because I could not have done it without him!

I want to lose another 3-4 lbs depending on how I stand on the scale and Paul is going for another 20 lbs!  The hard part is infront of me, I’ve lost lbs many times over the years and have always found it and usually a few more!  This time feels different and Paul is determined so I don’t think he will ever let me get away with what we did in the past!

In the coming weeks I will share some of things we do different and some of the indulgences and some of what I call Ah Ha moments!

Now off to consume another head of celery!

59! For real

It’s my Birthday!  When we are out on the road it is mostly lots of fun but I have to admit that on my birthday I am especially home sick!  Paul mostly handles it pretty well unless he misses all the clues!  This year was no different, I really love living our life but I have to admit today I wanted to be home with my girls!  They both called very early in the morning so that helped and then Paul planned us a very nice afternoon including dinner on the lake where he even picked the restaurant, called them and chose my meal, complete with dessert that they don’t even make there!

We head to Sandpoint, Idaho where Paul had made a reservation for us to take a SeaDoo ride.  I love the water and have great memories of houseboating on the Delta with my family and loving the SeaDoo so this was going to be really great!  We arrive there and they have no reservation!  Paul had only left a message, cell service is lousy here or they have lousy bookeeping but they said they called and left a message!  The bad news was they didn’t have anymore openings, the good news was it’s  a cute little town and they were having a craft festival right near the beach!

We enjoyed the craft fair and then I took a plunge into the lake with a little sunbathing afterwards!

Then it was finally time for dinner!  We have been dieting as everyone knows by now so dinner out is a really special treat!  The restaurant was right on the beach so we changed and headed over!  It’s my birthday so of course I’m having a cocktail! or two!!!  Then Paul orders our dinner!  That’s different.  I don’t think I have ever had someone order my food for me!  I didn’t even have to decide between the amazing sounding dishes because he did that for me!  He can be so romantic!

Dinner was wonderful and now for dessert!  I’ve been talking about what I have really been missing and my favorite dessert is a warm brownie topped with really cold vanilla ice cream and a bit of chocolate sauce!  Paul had requested this when he made the reservation and they don’t make it but they make a molten chocolate cake but they don’t have ice cream!  Between Paul and the hostess they had figured we can get the cake to go, walk to the ice cream shop and get a scoop of ice cream and there you go!  That’s what we did!,  The girl in the ice cream shop was impressed that there was that much effort put into dessert!  And it was PERFECTION!!!!

My birthday was almost perfect and I really enjoyed the meal!  The bad news is the scale was not friendly the next morning!  More about that next post!

Moving forward – or East!

I got a new bike!

I got a new bike!

Remember our bikes got stolen in California while waiting for our RV to be repaired!  While we were in Spokane I found a bicycle on Craigslist and we went and bought it!  Craigslist can be creepy and this was no different; two guys hanging out infront of a very rundown shack of a house waiting for us to arrive to buy an bike for $80.  I took it for a test drive and offered them $50.  That was the easiest negotiation I’ve ever done.  As we were loading the bike into the car, the two guys walk off down the street!  Hmm,,  maybe they didn’t even live there?  maybe they were stealing it right then!  Anyway, I got a bike to ride and it is very nice!

We moved today!  Another state on our map!  This is the first trip to Idaho in the new Motorhome so a sticker gets to go onto the map!

We are at the Riley Creek Campground right on the Pend Orielle River/Lake!  They call it a river but it is more like a lake because of the dams.

We will be here a week for more fun in the sun!

Small Towns, lots of trees and a River

Friday, August 7th, 2015

One more day trip north along the Selkirk Scenic Loop and we made it to Bonners Ferry.  This was where the gold prospectors needed a ferry to cross the river to head to Canada for gold and one very enterprising man built one and a town for supplies.  Our plan was to continue into Canada for an international day but someone forgot the passports until we were 25 miles up the road!

We did find a very nice river where a few people were taking a swim!  I wanted to join them, the water looked wonderful but there was only an outhouse to change and it just wasn’t that inviting!

BonnersFerry

Sometimes where we are out exploring this wonderful country it is hard to tell what state you are in; everywhere has the same stores, restaurants but once in awhile I am reminded I’m not in California anymore!  Our at least not in the Bay Area!

Nine Holes and a Few Deer

Golfing could become a habit if I had enough money!  We found a really nice course and played on a beautiful afternoon.

They had deer everywhere!  They marked the Tee Boxes in blue deer, white deer and gold deer!  I played from the gold since there were no red and this course was very long!  They had one hole that was over 500 yds from the gold!

Another afternoon and perfect weather

We decided to take it easy one day and headed into town just to check out the Pend Oreille Museum and learn a bit about the area.  Paul loves museums, me I enjoy looking for something interesting that I might remember.  The museum had lots of interesting artifacts about the Pend O’reille Valley but we learned from the curator that we had been pronouncing the name all wrong!  It’s pronounce Ponderay!  It’s French and we thought it was Irish.

Not automatic at all! No wonder women had to stay home! Laundry would be an everyday event, not once a week!

There was lots of old farm equipment, tractors, a fire truck and lots of collections that had been donated by local citizens so that they could be enjoyed rather than sitting in someones attic!

Like he is going to use that!

We had a nice enjoyable day wandering through the museum and then we walked along Main Street where we stopped into the local Soda Fountain and had a rootbeer float!  Yep, we sat right up at the counter and watched the girl fill a boot with rootbeer from the tap and then top it with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream.  It was served on a saucer and it is a good thing cause Paul had the rootbeer overflowing!

Just a Wildflower

Just a Wildflower

How simple is that?

This morning I had the chance to just sit and listen to the sounds of the forest before anyone was awake.  The animals were very awake!  Duke needed to go out which is very odd (we realized later that he wasn’t feeling well). Once he had me up and we saw a very large deer I decided that 6 am was a pretty good hour to get up!

Hard at work, 7 am

Hard at work, 7 am

This guy was huge and right above our RV working away on a hole for about an hour while I watched.

The hole is up about 50 feet and very easy to see from the ground!  The squirrels were also very busy but didn’t have time to sit while I took their picture.  Usually later in the day they are friendlier.

We are hanging out for a few days near Little Diamond Lake, Newport WA.  It is in the Northeastern corner of Washington and today we took a hike that we had to enter in Idaho and then back to Washington before getting there.  We also ended up 10 miles from the Canadian border!  Beautiful country with lots of lakes and the Pend Oreille River.

Today’s goal was to get onto one of the many hiking trails.  I found one, Bead Lake Trail that would have went part way around the lake, was moderate difficulty and the dog was welcome.  It was about a 20 mile drive and all the information stated that it was hard to find and not very popular!  Sounds great!  Only when we finally found it, the trail took a steep descent into the forest and didn’t look well marked so plan B!

We continued up the road along The Pend Oreille River to Lake Sullivan where it was suppose to be a lakeshore trail around 1/2 the lake for an 8 mile round trip hike!  We found this one after only asking the ranger guy and it was a very nice hike only it wasn’t really along the lake shore.

Most of the trail was either away from the lake or high above it!  We did finally find a spot where Duke could get to the lake and get a drink!

It was a beautiful hike, although the fear of poison oak is always on our minds.  We saw lots of greenery with 3 leaves!  After awhile every piece of folliage starts to have 3 leaves!  This was a very narrow trail and when we got home everyone got a shower and the clothes are being washed!  If we survive this hike without an outbreak I might get Paul out into nature again, otherwise we are going to be stuck on paved walking trails!

Paul trying to get Duke to pose!

Paul trying to get Duke to pose!

We only hiked about 2 miles in because this wasn’t a loop trail,  Paul was concerned about the greenery and I had other spots to check out on our trip back down The International Selkirk Loop,  280-mile scenic drive encircling the spectacular Selkirk Mountains in eastern Washington, northern Idaho and southeastern British Columbia.  We did only about 40 miles of it today.  I think we will do another section later next week!

Just outside of Metaline Falls, where we stopped into the post office to send some mail we found a short little walk to Sweet Creek Waterfalls.  What a very nice little rest stop with picnic tables and you can get right down into the creek!

SweetCreekWaterfall

If you look closely you can see a couple enjoying the falls between the upper and lower cascades!  We climbed up to the break and met them.  A very nice couple who were ready to leave and let us enjoy the spot to ourselves!

A very nice day and I got some much enjoyed time out in the woods!

Wild Berries

Wild Berries

Back at our home in the woods,  a shot of some wild berries!  The area just north of here boasts about Huckleberries and it is picking season.  They only grow wild and they make all kinds of things out of them.  Picking them is a bit of a sport as they are a favorite of the bears in the region!  Careful!. I wonder if these berries that are right outside of my door are huckleberries!  I soon will be finding out!
