Really big peaks

Sunday, August 28th, 2016

Mt. Rainer,  a beautiful day and I’m back in Washington.  Paul moved south of Seattle while I was visiting San Jose.  It is like aiming at a moving target when I need to buy a ticket and fly home.  The trip home was great and Paul enjoyed his bachelor time I am sure.  At least the house looked good when I got back.

I returned to Washington and we had a beautiful day so why not take a hike.  We actually didn’t really hike because we brought Duke along and you can’t take dogs on any trails in the National Parks.  It was a free day so we figured it would be too crowded to really hike and we were right.

We did get to see the mountain and it was beautiful.

Our time in Puget Sound

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

We are parked in LaConner, WA which is right on Puget Sound.  It is beautiful here and we are getting perfect weather.  We arrived back in Seattle on Friday and brought Amy & Nick with us to his dads house in Mt. Vernon which is very close to LaConner.  Before we could get them home we had to stop in Byer and pick Duke up from the dog sitter.  Duke was over joyed to see us but quickly went to whoever would throw the ball, of course!  Loyalty always.  We arrived at Nick’s Dads home and enjoyed there beautiful patio for a light lunch!  complete with a delicious dessert.  The calories never end.  We finally made it home about 2 pm and I promptly headed for the bed.  I slept for about 2 hours, got up, sat in the chair and headed back to bed before 6:30 waking up at 7:30 am Saturday morning.  I was beat and felt like I was getting a cold.  The good news is by Sunday I was feeling fine and we took a drive out to Whidbey Island to visit a nephew who is stationed at the Naval Base on the island.  It was beautiful.  We saw a boat race and then we headed to Deception Pass State Park where the views of Puget Sound are spectacular.

A boat joy riding through the sound.  These guys were definitely feeling good, loud music, lots of howls and even a wave.

Just before sunset and a snapped this shot.  The picture is way cooler than the actual sunset which it is usually the other way around.

Deception Pass Bridge.  The boat above was passing under this bridge when I took the photo.  That’s not our RV, it just happened to be crossing and I thought it would be fun to photograph.

Week of Sailing

Bon Voyage!

                    Bon Voyage!

We had an amazing week with friends and family among 3000 other guests as we sailed into Alaska from Seattle.  Our group was 17 and we had family from New York, Colorado, San Jose as well as many friends from home.  It was definitely the way to celebrate my birthday.

The boat was lots of fun, with the expected entertainment, food choices, and amazing care in the cabin.  We were all grouped together so the halls were a bit noisy and the balconies were a place to visit your neighbor even if it was 6 am – there were whales!  and icebergs, and a few bald eagles.  We didn’t want anyone to miss the excitement (or was it we were awake so why shouldn’t our friends)!  One evening we had a pesky towel man that would not turn the TV off!

We ate too much, tried to exercise but the activities never end so it is really easy to say “run in circles on the track (1/9th of a mile long) or go play bingo!  We played lots of card games,  had a little survey test to get to know our friends better,  sang a little Karoke!  I found out Nick (son-in-law) can really ROCK it!  We saw the shows, drank a few drinks of the day, learned how to put an outfit together from others suitcases when someones suitcase didn’t make it until day 3 –  thats a long story!  We sat in the hot tub reminiscing, sun catching and of course a lot of sightseeing!  We saw whales off the boat; a porcupine, a couple of bears, salmon swimming upriver, and some bald eagles.

We took a tour of the Glacier and a waterfall; we rode the train that was the same route for the Gold Rush in Alaska; Ziplining in British Columbia; and a PediCab ride around Victoria.  The weather was pretty good, one rainy day in Skagway where we found you can still get condoms for $1!,  the beer is $8.  The seas were calm and no one got sick or lost, except for those 3 suitcases.

Formal, Captains night! We actually got everyone in the photo!

I think this guy has my donut! It probably looks better on him after 6 days of overeating and never missing dessert!

Another wonderful memory.  Sharing it with my friends and family was the best part of the whole week (and a couple chocolate cakes with vanilla ice cream).  Can’t wait to get home and see everyone again.

We made it!

Monday, August 1st, 2016

We left June 1 heading to Colorado for a wedding on July 10 and then heading back to Washington by Aug 1.  We did it.  We arrived in LaConner WA at the Thousand Trails Campground where we will be staying for the next 3 weeks.

The weather here is very mild. Two days ago we were in Cashmere WA and it was 109 at 6 pm. Today it might get up to the mid 70’s.

When we left we had two blankets on the bed and very soon we had to remove one.  When we got to the Rocky Mountains we had to add the blanket and the Down comforter.  By the time we left Estes Park we were back to only the two blankets but soon I removed one of the blankets.  Last night I had to pull the down comforter onto the bed and this am I had to start the fireplace to get some heat.

It is like we have had summer and it is gone!  When we head south in 3 weeks we will be back to summer.  Next week we will be in Alaska!  I have my parka packed!
