Had a “little” rain last night

May 5th, 2021

Mandeville is just above Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana.  New Orleans is just south of us if you could swim.  We are staying in a very nice state park that is about 25% full.  We have been here a couple times before.  The location is great.  We arrived yesterday about 5:30, took a nice walk to the beach and returned about 6:30.  Within about 5 minutes of returning the sky opened  up and let the storm commence.  We had buckets of rain, thunder and lightening most of the night.  It finally let up about 8:30 this am.

We were lucky, our RV pad is raised up, we couldn’t get to our picnic table; Some people did not do as well.  Teddy and I took a walk and several of the RV’s could not get out their doors.  The water started to recede about 10 so not so bad.  I look all around the park and all I think is the mosquitos are going to be partying soon.

The trees are beautiful with all the moss hanging down.

It looks like a scene from a movie.  And it just so happens that they are filming a movie right here in the park.  The only sign of anything happening is a little tent set up at the entrance to the Day Use area that a girls is checking cast and crew in.  She wouldn’t tell me the name of the film; maybe its a current series?

Its very quiet here and tomorrow we head to Mississippi where we will spend about a week just relaxing and enjoying some seafood I hope!

More Texas Touring

May 2nd, 2021

Sunday was very windy again so my sister headed home before lunch and Paul and I were just going to relax but I decided we should ride the ferry to Galveston. Its free so why not!  The wait was not too long and the ride over was very exciting.

Lots of Seagulls, they announce to only feed them off the back of the ferry. The seagulls didn’t get the memo, they followed us the whole way

We drove around Galveston a little bit but there were more people in Galveston than I had seen anywhere in over a year so we just took a drive, found some to go food and headed back to the ferry line.  The return trip took a little longer waiting in line but we had a picnic and the weather had finally cooperated and we had a nice breeze and plenty of sunshine.

Tomorrow we head further east, the humidity is killing me!

Texas coast

May 1st, 2021

Man is it humid here!   and then our air conditioner stopped cooling while we were visiting a dealer in Katy!  The good news is we were at the dealer who had one and warranty took care of the money.  They replaced it while Paul worked and we didn’t have to change our plans at all.

We were off to Crystal Beach across the bay from Galveston to meet my sister and her husband who live outside of Houston.  We met them at a very quaint RV park right across the street from the beach.  The location is perfect, away from the crowds and the beach is right there, unfortunately it was so windy we couldn’t really sit outside much.  They have a small room that they are adding to the park and we were the only ones there basically so we had plenty of space to hang out, visit, eat and play some cards.

My view from in front of our site. I can see the waves from my kitchen table

Any storm at all and the water will be over the road.  Houses are all on stilts, some higher than others.  We speculated about why some are low and some high; I’m pretty sure it has to do with wealth, the more money you have the better your ability to protect your stuff.

Its pretty humid here and the wind is blowing like crazy but the people are out and living life; some face masks some not! We had dinner out Saturday, great seafood and even grilled was an option (usually you get near the south and everything is fried).  The restaurant was right on the gulf so we had a nice view for dinner at  Stingaree Restaurant.   The dinner was great but the atmosphere was wonderful.

Stingaree, Crystal Beach TX

These were a couple tables on the deck leading up to the restaurant; you better be ready to get your toes wet!

The beach was beautiful and they let people drive on.  We walked as it was only about 50 yards away.  We found a few shells, mostly broken oyster shells but its fun bending over, flipping them to see if its a good one.

Sunset was behind the road but the sky was still beautiful.

We took a ride along the beach after dinner and these guys were fishing for something with fishing line attached to plastic water bottles!  The women were on the seawall waiting to cook em dinner with a 5 gal propane tank, a single burner a pot and some vegetable oil!  They had a group of at least 10 so hopefully soon they catch something.

And here is my last photo of our day

Drive thru coffee!  They were closed or I would                   have had to stop!

Paul works, I play

April 29th, 2021

Today while Paul solves the problems of the RV dealers I ventured into Houston to see an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, MfaH  of David Hockney – Van Gogh: The joy of Nature.  I had an entry ticket for 11 am as they are being COVID safe even here and I was a bit early so I was able to wander around the museum district a bit finding a very interesting sculpture garden.

                        Running man

               1 Bird in the foreground
2 Stainless Cloud Column in the                                  background

                                         Just fun!

                                         Just weird!!!

It was a beautiful museum and the exhibit was fascinating.  Only a few of Van Gogh’s works but a couple that I had seen in Amsterdam and a few I knew nothing about.  David Hockney does some pretty cool stuff also.

These are created with an Ipad! Not my Ipad!!! and really big.

He did a lot of watercolor painting, sketching and of course oil.  Not Van Gogh but creative none the less.

The rest of the museum had a nice variety of art works.

This is based on a fairy tale and was very scary to me!

And I’ll save the best (worse of last)  I am always drawn to the contemporary art mostly because it does make you think but sometimes it is just too strange! The artist was making a statement but it just seems strange. I read the title and description and I’m not seeing it.

Black tulle and iron structure on wheels,                                  A negra

I guess that is why it’s displayed in a museum exhibit and I have yet to be displayed.

Happy 37 years of …..

April 28th, 2021

We did it!  We have made another year in this journey called life.  There have been so many adventures with lots of fun and many bumps but we made it.  37 years, 2 daughters, 2 granddaughters, 8 years houseless (which no one thought we could do it, even us!) and life keeps moving forward.

Paul picked our spot for dinner since we are in Texas and he is working so no big adventure this year but he found something that had promise.

Cooper’s. Maybe my family is from Katy, TX!

The food was plentiful, not the best but the beans were all you can eat along with White bread and Parkay!  I would give it 2 stars for effort and the ribs and beans were tasty.  I didn’t like the bbq sauce and to me it’s all about the bbq sauce.

on the road again

April 27th, 2021

We are off again.  I flew into Phoenix Friday am where Paul met me after working this past week in Southern CA.  We will hit the interstate to make it to Houston TX by Sunday evening.  The weather is beautiful and our first night we made it to the New Mexico welcome center where it was quiet so we spent the night

The rock formations in Easter Arizona are beautiful and a welcome site to the dessert scape along Interstate 10

Saturday was another full day of Interstate driving, only to stop for fuel and to stretch the bodies!  Teddy isn’t sure this is the most fun he has had in his short life!!!

Sunday, I opted to find a better way than trudging along I-10 thru San Antonio and Houston so we headed to a few byways, a few missed turns but some beautiful scenery thru Texas Hill Country along US-190.  The weather was beautiful and we made a couple quick stops to rest.

A beautiful park in a tiny town near Killeen, TX.

This bird had just finished a morsel he had gotten from the stream. He was watching me but unwilling to fly away

A happy little family

We made it to our destination by dinner and will be in North Houston for a couple days of work before moving to Katy, TX for more work.

Trying to stay safe, Idaho to home

September 15th, 2020

Back into Idaho, we keep hearing about the fires but so far we haven’t seen any sign.

We are headed to Stanley Idaho because I read about it somewhere!  But…. of course we find other things along the way.

We found a very nice BLM site near Salmon, ID where we got the best site and I think it was $3 a night with our Golden Age Pass.  We hit the jackpot, you have to drive off the highway about 2 miles but when we get there

This is our site, and that is the river!  It takes a curve right here and there are lots of boulders so the sounds are wonderful.

Paul loves this place almost as much as Teddy; big fires, cold enough to need one and Teddy can play fetch right outside my door.  This is hard to beat, too bad I read about Stanley cause I got to move in 3 days!

Stanley!  The drive from Salmon to Stanley was beautiful. Once we got to Stanley we finally heard about the fires and a little smoke was in the air.  The  Redfish Lake was what I had heard about so we headed past Stanley a couple miles and found the lake.  I wasn’t impressed, the trees were sparse and we had seen a couple beautiful spots on our was to Stanley so we spent one night and headed back to the Forestry sites we had seen along the river.

Now this is more like it

Stanley is a tiny town that looks like it is focused on the winter visitors.  The cell service at our site 5 miles out of town is not! so we take a drive once a day and check email and call the kids.  There is an awesome restaurant that serves great coffee and beautiful pastries.  One morning I needed to get online early so I headed to town, it was about 40 degrees and people were ordering breakfast and eating on the patio!  I am thinking their coffee and eggs were cold before they had the second bite.

The scenery here is beautiful.

This guy sat watching me one afternoon for at least an hour; maybe he was watching the river, I don’t know.

Everyday we saw bald eagles hanging along the banks of the river.  They are beautiful.

There are many hiking trails nearby. This one is right in our campground.  A nice 2 mile into the forest.

Teddy taking a dip

There are a lot of hot springs in the area.  This one is right along the highway about 5 miles from our campsite.  I always like the natural springs.  Paul likes to play.

The Sunbeam hot springs flow into the cold river but people have rigged up hoses, and rocks to contain the spring water.  It was very hot in spots.  I had to find a spot that was just warm to take a soak.

Paul doesn’t like the natural hot springs, he says he likes the temperature regulated but he had a great time playing with the hoses people had rigged up.  He spent his time moving hoses and filling the old tubs people had moved into the area.

The view of the river with a small tub built with stones.  This is the best type of hot tub in my opinion; when you get to warm just toss your arm into the river and cool right down.

Then we found this little Ghost Town, about 10 miles down a gravel road.  Custer, the dredging equipment is still there from the Gold Rush days

This was in one of the broken windows of the buildings that are still standing.  The dredging continued for miles along this small river leading into the Salmon river.  In its day it was a bustling goldrush town.

Trying to stay safe, Montana

September 8th, 2020

While we enjoyed Idaho we need to get into Montana so Paul can see a couple more dealers and we will also visit Glacier NP.  It took us 2 times to get into the park. The first day we were turned around near the base of Going to the Sun Road.  Because of COVID they were limiting cars so the parking lots would not be so full.  Our second attempt we left Whitefish about 6 am.  Too early but the park was empty and spectacular.

Paul and Teddy are learning to appreciate one another.

Yep,  I think Teddy has found a perfect family and I think we got really lucky.

While I am not sure I would want to get up that early for most things it was definitely worth it.  Once we reached the summit very few cars followed.  We had some areas all to ourselves.  We can’t really hike in the park with Teddy but we saw some beautiful views.

We are staying in Whitefish,  I can walk to the town.  The town is busy and following protocols very well.  I feel very safe here. Whitefish is a small resort town and very upscale.  The restaurants are open and we found one with a great menu and outdoor dining.  I spent one morning browsing the quilt/gift shop and spent a little.

We also went to the local farmers market.  We didn’t get any produce as the line for the best variety was a 1/2 mile long. We did have a couple treats for dinner.

Small towns are always fun to explore.  Whitefish is definitely upscale but I still found plenty of things to buy.

Big birdhouse, Little birdhouse! The things you see when you are looking

Trying to stay safe, Labor Day in Bayview

September 4th, 2020

Bayview for Labor Day, what a lovely find.  The only problem was internet or phone was only available in front of the office.  So Paul just had his morning coffee and stayed in touch.

Bayview, a quiet little spot on Lake Pend Oreille.  We had a wonderful time relaxing and enjoying not being in the craziness of the tourist areas near here.  Labor Day was very calm

This was the view from the coffee shop/laundry above Bayview docks.  We spent several mornings here during our stay.  The coffee was great as well as the breakfast sandwiches.  The staff was all family and so nice.

Just some of the stuff in the dock areas

Trying to stay safe and travel, Oregon

August 25th, 2020

Just as the fires were starting we headed north.  We are on our way to Montana, Idaho to relax and of course Paul will get in a small amount of work.  The weather was perfect for us and we spent several days in eastern Oregon, staying at a forestry campground for $3 with our Golden Age Pass!  Cant beat that and we had the place to ourselves

10 sites along a gravel road and you can’t see the next site, plus no one was there!

Then we moved north because we need to get into Idaho soon.  We could have stayed but too much of a good thing….

wildlife right in the campsite, no concerns about me

So far no forest fires or smoke.  We are staying ahead of the CA fires.
